The day before our eldest daughter got married, the bridal party and parents of the couple met for dinner. My husband called everyone's attention to make an announcement which I thought was to toast the bride and groom. To my surprise Patrick told those present that in a few days we would be celebrating our 30th Wedding anniversary and he then presented me with a beautiful gift.
The last piece of jewellery he had bought me was my wedding ring so to say that I was astonished was an understatement. What touched me the most was the trouble he had gone to select the stone and the design that he did. He made 3 separate visits to the jeweller that was a bus ride into town. If any of you know my husband, then you know he would drive hundreds of kilometres for the right bull, piece of machinery or a field day but flowers or jewellery would have been another matter. That is until now.
So in honour of my husband I give him a gift which he would cherish the most and that is one I give freely. I mean it is actually FREE, except for my time, my thoughts and my industry.
I woke up this morning I am sure channelling a comedian .. perhaps Dave Allen as I started thinking "a man walked into a bar and saw a priest and cowboy and a stripper." For those of you at the wedding, you would understand exactly what this was about, for someone at the wedding commented that they did not realise that someone like Patrick had a such diverse array of friends. Funny but true.
So in honour of my husband Patrick, I have written a poem about him and have promised to put it in the cheapest frame possible as his gift to me cleaned out the bank account. I also promised him that I would reach a greater audience than the bridal party in honour of him so please read this for him.
Call me Patrick
not Pat, not Mr Wunsch
I am man
Not a simple man
But man
That’s what I am
A man of the people, the earth, the
land
A man of greater things I call family
because family comes first
Often before myself
A man who is loved and respected by
my wife
A man who will always listen
A man of the right thing to do
A man of clear thought
A man with the eloquence to express
clearly
The words that have an archer’s
accuracy
I know when to hold them or fold them
A man of the informed decision
A man who gives when it is not
expected
A man of inner integrity
A man who feels deeply
A man who loves more deeply
A man who can concede
A man who plays the game
strategically
But wins by Queensbury rules
A man of the past present and future
A man who likes land beneath his
feet, the dirt in his hands and rolling fields of good pasture
A man who gives back to the earth
A man who takes care of his “girls”
on the farm
A man who is always there for his
family regardless of where he is living or working
A man who raised his children with
his wife
A man who is 24/7 family, whether
they like it or not
A man who has embraced technology quicker
than his skill to use it
But that is what family is for
Call me Patrick
But only if I like you
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY
